Melissa Cohn began creating the curve in 1985, originating her first loan at her dining room table...and that was the start of The Manhattan Mortgage Company. For the first two years, she and one other employee did everything from answering phones to copying applications. Under Melissa’s leadership, Manhattan Mortgage has grown to become a five billion-dollar business and the premier residential mortgage company in the country. A very hands-on owner and CEO, Melissa has been named a Top Originator in the nation by the editors of Mortgage Originator since 1996 - and was named #1 Mortgage Originator in the nation for 2008 and 2007.
A nationally recognized expert in the mortgage industry, Melissa serves as a Governor of the Real Estate Board of New York and is also a member of numerous other boards and committees. She is frequently quoted by the New York Times, Bloomberg, New York Magazine, Forbes and the Wall Street Journal and appears regularly on CNN, Fox, CNBC and ABC News. This year, Melissa was named #1 Mortgage Broker in The NY Observer Readers’ Poll for The Power 100: The Most Powerful People in Real Estate and in 2008, she was recognized by the editors of The NY Observer as one of The Top 100 People in New York Real Estate. For four consecutive years (2006 - 2009), NY Residential Magazine has recognized Melissa as one of the “Top 20 Women in Real Estate and Construction.” In 2007, she was bestowed with the City of Hope’s annual Spirit of Life Award, its highest honor. She also won the Stevie Award in the Best Entrepreneur – Service Businesses category in the 3rd annual Stevie Awards for Women in Business. The Stevie Awards, hailed as “the business world’s own Oscars” honor women executives, entrepreneurs, and the companies they run – worldwide. In 2006, she was honored as a “Woman of Action” by the Israel Cancer Research Fund . In 2005, Melissa was selected as the first recipient of The Retreat Hope Award for her extraordinary dedication and support of causes that benefit women and children both on the East End of Long Island and in New York City. In 2004, Melissa received the Builder of the Year Award from Habitat for Humanity for being an outstanding corporate partner. She was also named Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year (EOY) for 2003 in the Financial Services category for the Metro NY Area; the EOY award was created by Ernst & Young to recognize outstanding individuals on a regional, national and global basis. In addition, she has been recognized by Lighthouse International, the Child Development Center of the Hamptons, North Shore Children’s Hospital and the Capuchin Food Pantry for her contributions to the community.
The eldest of five children, Melissa was born in 1960 in Paterson, NJ. She majored in American Studies at Smith College and graduated in 1982. Melissa accepted an offer with Citibank and quickly put her analytical and problem solving skills to work. Her manager and mentor taught her that mortgages would be the cornerstone of banking and turned her focus towards mortgage financing. After eighteen months at Citibank and a stint at GCB, a sales and marketing firm, Melissa decided to set out on her own. Realizing that no single bank could provide the best loan products to all borrowers, she founded The Manhattan Mortgage Company...and the rest is history. Today, Manhattan Mortgage taps over 100 banks to find the right mortgage for clients who are purchasing and refinancing residential properties.
Melissa’s passion for business is complemented by her passion for competitive horseback riding which she shares with her two daughters. While fully focused on her business and family, Melissa also makes room in her life to support various charitable causes.
